How a group of river swimmers built Melbourne's most passionate open water community.
Yarraswim.co started in 2020 when a small group of friends, frustrated by pool closures during lockdown, rediscovered the Yarra River as a place to swim.
What began as sunrise meetups at Studley Park grew into something bigger. We realised that Melbourne had world-class river swimming hiding in plain sight — but no one was talking about it, mapping it, or making it accessible.
Today, we're a community of over 2,000 swimmers, a swim school with 12 coaches, and the most comprehensive guide to Yarra River swimming anywhere. Our mission is simple: reconnect Melbourne with its river.
Five friends meet at Studley Park for a sunrise swim during Melbourne's first lockdown. The Yarra was empty, clean, and beautiful.
Word spreads through social media. 50 swimmers join a Saturday morning meetup at Warrandyte. The idea for a proper community takes shape.
The website goes live with swimming spot guides, safety information, and a weekly newsletter. 500 subscribers in the first month.
Our first coaches begin teaching open water skills. The "River Ready" beginners course sells out in 48 hours.
300 swimmers complete the inaugural 3km Yarra River Swim from Fairfield to Studley Park, raising $45,000 for Yarra Riverkeeper.
2,000+ members, 12 coaches, partnerships with Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria. The river swimming movement is stronger than ever.
We advocate for cleaner waterways and partner with environmental organisations. Every swim is a reminder of what we're protecting.
River swimming is for everyone. We actively work to make our programs accessible regardless of age, ability, or background.
The river demands respect. We never compromise on safety and continuously educate our community on responsible swimming.
Questions about our programs, partnerships, or just want to say g'day? We'd love to hear from you.
